High-Scoring CCM/USA Hockey Event Thrills Fans in Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Team Plante defeated Team Roenick, 6-4, in the 4th annual CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game here tonight at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York. Luke McInnis (Hingham, Mass./Youngstown Phantoms), who notched two points, including the game-winning goal, earned Player of the Game honors.

“It’s a whole rink of guys that are obviously really big, but have a lot of skill and a lot of speed,” said Derek Plante (Cloquet, Minn.), head coach of Team Plante. “When I was a player, I think anybody who was over 6-foot-4 was usually pretty slow, but these guys were amazingly fast for their size. It’s really fun to watch these guys play like that and as they grow into their bodies they can only get better and better.”

“I was really impressed,” said Jeremy Roenick (Boston, Mass.), head coach of Team Roenick. "When you’re down that low and you see their speed and their explosiveness, it was really impressive. These kids today, they’ve been bred to be winners and champions and great hockey players and you could tell tonight they wanted to put on a show.”

Luke Kunin (Chesterfield, Mo./University of Wisconsin) opened the scoring for Team Roenick just :10 after the puck dropped when he skated in on net and converted on a wrist shot.

At 4:16, Team Plante evened the score as Max Jones (Rochester, Mich./London Knights) collected a backhanded pass from William Knierim (Skokie, Ill./Dubuque Fighting Saints) and tapped the puck in at the right post.

Team Roenick closed the first period at 2-1 when Tim Gettinger (North Olmsted, Ohio/Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) redirected a shot by Michael Campoli (Ann Arbor, Mich./U.S. National Under-18 Team) from the blue line at 9:59.

Trent Frederic (St. Louis, Mo./U.S. National Under-18 Team) and Logan Brown (Raleigh, N.C./Windsor Spitfires) gained the lead for Team Plante in the second frame, but Team Roenick’s Matthew Tkachuk (St. Louis, Mo./London Knights) and Kunin responded with a pair of tallies :10 apart to make it 4-3. Their two goals were the quickest by one team in CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game history.

At 13:23 of the third period, Jones scored his second goal to knot the score 4-4.

With 1:50 left on the scoreboard, McInnis tallied a power-play goal off a feed from Charlie McAvoy (Long Beach, N.Y./Boston University) to seal the win for Team Plante. Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn./U.S. National Under-18 Team) put away an empty-netter with :31 remaining to account for the 6-4 final.

Team Roenick’s Stephen Dhillon (Buffalo, N.Y./Niagara IceDogs) made 19 saves, while Tyler Parsons (Chesterfield, Mich./London Knights) stopped four of five shots before leaving the game. Team Plante’s Evan Sarthou (Black Diamond, Wash./Tri-City Americans) turned away 24 of 28 shots, and Ryan Edquist (Lakeville, Minn./Madison Capitols) stopped all five shots he faced.
